Before you start your search for child care, take a few moments to read about some important and helpful information about selecting and monitoring child care. Evaluate ProgramsTake time to evaluate each program, interview each provider and ask for references. You may also want to request background checks if you choose to use an unregulated child care provider. Link to question checklist Compliance / Inspection History:After searching for but before selecting a child care provider, you can check the inspection records of regulated child care providers at the Virginia Department of Social Services. Complaints:If, in visiting or utilizing child care providers, you notice conditions or practices that cause you concern, we urge you to contact the VA DSS Division of Licensing. Link to Regional Offices list If the provider is Voluntarily Registered, please call the Virginia Department of Social Services Voluntary Registration offices at 1-800-543-7545. To file a complaint for child abuse or neglect, contact Child Protective Services at (800) 552-7096. Financial Assistance:Depending on your family size and household income, you may be eligible for financial assistance to help pay for child care. Contact your local Department of Social Services in the county or city in which you live.
